Weekend Festivities: Apollo and Prom

Kaitlin Resler
Spring on Mount Ida is in full-swing, and with that come the various events, traditions, and celebrations as we start to think about wrapping up the 2021-2022 school year! Though the weekend began with the official launch of Infinite Horizon: The Campaign for Emma Willard School, it wasn’t the only fun on the horizon.

For the second time, the Black Latinx Student Union (BLSU) held the annual Apollo show (inspired by the Apollo Theatre) on the inner campus. With decorations abound, performers showed off their talents at the front of the chapel to an audience sitting festival-style on blankets. Tacos and Soul Food were served.

Performances of all kinds graced the Chapel steps, from music (including a particularly rousing sing-along of Taylor Swift’s “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” to dance, to a rousing rendition of “The Confrontation” from Les Miserables with the added addition of lightsabers.

Several students represented the singer-songwriter genre at Apollo.

Ms. Gilmore and Dr. Bennett drew great cheers from the crowd during their performance!

The show was briefly interrupted for an interlude of fireworks celebrating the campaign launch, as everyone headed to the playing fields to admire the colorful sky before heading back for more performances and an open-mic segment of the evening.

Campus wasn’t quiet for long, as the white tent took on new decor in preparation for prom: floral garlands, glitter streamers, lanterns, and various stations for prom activities (build your own bouquet, cotton candy, a mocktail station) filled up the space ahead of the juniors and seniors.

As the night wound down, the DJ station (expertly run by members of the sophomore class) let the remaining dancers know that s’more fixings were waiting for them down at a bonfire.

Thank you to everyone who helped make these events incredible!
