Musical May Day

The Emma Willard School community gathered on this brisk, sunny Friday for the traditional May Day festivities, orchestrated by the Class of 2022.

Zara S. ’22 and Carolina O. ’22 acted as emcees for the event, introducing this year’s much-anticipated theme: High School Musical! The Class of 2022 May Court, chosen by a vote of the student body, took the steps together: (L-R) Gabby Z., Taylor S., Tess J., Rowan L-M., and Nicole B.

One noticeable difference this year was the absence of a throne on the May Court platform. “The senior class unanimously voted to remove the ‘queen’ from the May Court and transition to a more gender-inclusive group of ‘royals’ instead,” shared Taylor S. ’22, who served on the May Day Committee. “This also made sure that all five seniors were celebrated equally.”

After the royals were seated, the Class of 2025 pranced onto the Senior Triangle to perform the traditional maypole dance.

As is the May Day custom, the junior class also added to the entertainment by providing a special dance performed by Yolanda S. ’23, Paula S. ’23, and Casy L. ’23.

After the more traditional dances, the senior class danced and lip synced to songs from High School Musical. The 12 Tones gave an a capella performance of “What I’ve Been Looking For.”

The festivities wrapped up with visits to the ice cream truck and a picnic lunch.

“The senior class worked very hard over the past three weeks to prepare all the dance numbers for May Day,” Taylor says. “We spent many study halls practicing and had a lot of fun together. Similar to Revels, we got to work together on a big project and watch it come to life. As a May Day Head, it was fun to see everyone contribute their own flair to the choreography and step into their own if they had a special part.”

Thank you to all those who planned, organized, performed, and made May Day 2022 a moment to remember!
