Just like the previous year, 2022 was a year of firsts, thoughtful reflections, and incredible celebrations. Join us in remembering a few of our favorite memories from the last year with our top ten moments from Emma News!
Emma Willard School announced the public launch of Infinite Horizon: The Campaign for Emma Willard School, to will support and strengthen the school’s commitment to girls’ education. The School community—Trustees, EMployees, and students—gathered on Mount Ida on May 13, to celebrate the momentous occasion.

We kicked off Black History Month at Emma Willard School with a story almost 75 years in the making. On February 1, 2022 we dedicated a portrait of Anne Spencer Thurman ’50, our first Black graduate, unveiled by students Ashauna L-S ’25, Kirsten R. ’25, and Narmene O. ’24. Head of School Jenny Rao, accompanied by Head of Institutional Equity and Inclusion Christine Gilmore, told the story of how we came to mark this occasion.

The Emma Willard School community—students, families, faculty, staff, and alumnae—came together to celebrate the Class of 2022 at the completion of their high school journey. In a continuation of the tradition of recognizing exemplary academic success, service, and dedication to Emma Willard School, two additional honors were presented during the Commencement ceremony.

Emma student Yaryna K. ’24—while trying to focus on her studies and on-campus life—is also worrying over the safety of her family back in Ukraine, and raising her voice to make a difference in any way she can. On Wednesday, March 2, 2022 Yaryna traveled to New York City to present a statement at the United Nations

Math Instructor Alexandra Schmidt shares an “only at Emma Willard” story of a California-born math teacher being asked by her Shanghai-born student to contribute to an all-volunteer project, on behalf of the American Library of Congress, that linked her grandparents’ language with American art and history.

Awards season at Emma! Honoring our founder’s vision, Emma Willard School proudly fosters in each young woman a love of learning, the habits of an intellectual life, and the character, moral strength, and qualities of leadership to serve and shape her world. In accordance with this vision, we annually honor students who show outstanding qualities in these areas at awards night.
